Record traffic jams in Moscow after heavy snowfall

Moscow - Moscow's heaviest snowfall for December 21 in 100 years backed up traffic for a total of 1,700 kilometres Monday, the Interfax news agency reported. Road crews working to clear the 23 centimetres of snow that fell overnight were only able to keep major thoroughfares open. Moscow's three major airports did not report problems, however.

The winter weather chaos was a bitter setback for Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov who has repeatedly announced his attention to shoot down snow clouds to save on the cost of winter cleanup.
