Heavy snow falls across much of the U.K. have meant that the Met Office has felt it necessary to issue severe weather warnings once again for most of the country. However the threat of up to 15 inches of snow in some southern counties has meant that the Met Office has issued emergency severe weather warnings for areas such as Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire and Southampton. This is the rarest weather warning the Met Office ever has to use.
The continued bad weather saw many schools throughout the country keeping their doors closed yesterday and a number of airports either had to close for long periods or cancel flights. Birmingham Airport was forced to close a runway because of the weather for a couple of hours meaning passengers were delayed. Liverpool John Lennon Airport was also forced to shut down for periods of time throughout the day. Leeds Bradford and Manchester Airport were able to stay open although they had closed earlier in the morning.
A number of ambulance services have warned that the weather will affect call out times and North West Ambulance Service has said that they will only be able to respond to incidents where a life is in danger. They have asked people to stay indoors if possible. Emergency services across the country have appealed to people only to dial 999 if there is a real emergency as they are being inundated. A spokesman for Manchester police yesterday begged people not to travel unless it was strictly necessary.
